About Me
Let’s do something different for once, shall we?
I’ll be as honest as I can be. After all, if we’re going to work together (or we already are!) it’s for the best you get to know me better. Besides, there’s an entire website and a resume where I already brag about my projects and skills.
I’m Guglielmo, a game designer from Europe (and I happily remark on this concept).
Entering the games industry has been interesting, to say the least. After hundreds of CVs sent and countless hours spent in dead-end environments that did me no good, I eventually landed my first game development gigs, worked on my first titles and ultimately started learning a lot, fixating on every aspect of the craft.
I know I’m speaking from a position of privilege, and that games are not (always) life-saving devices. Still, despite the apparent futileness of my endeavors, there is an aspect to my creative journey that is indeed important, and that is to find meaning.
I used to think (and still do to this day) that creating beauty is a service to the world in itself. But eventually, I started searching for a deeper reason for doing what I do.
The more I learn about ancient wisdom and the all-time classic question “What I have to do with my life”, the more the borders between reality and games start to fade. In other words, I realized that playfulness could be the quintessential way for us humans to experience life.
At this point, I started seeing no boundaries between my artistic life, the inner and the outer world. By gaining awareness and self-insight through my work, I bring awareness to this world.
A revelation struck me while watching The Bear. The strive for perfection is a painful path, but perfection is a service to others, and that’s ultimately all that matters. This is true while pursuing any kind of art, and video games are no different.
“If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t go out”.
Things that I find beautiful
Here’s an (unordered and evidently incomplete) list of some of the things that are meaningful and aesthetically pleasant to me, and shaped me as a creator. They’re the closest thing to perfection I can think of.
Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band
The sand scene from Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky)
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (Haruki Murakami)
Scandinavian Winter
The Dolomites
80/90s technology
